I do recall I needed to try a few times to get the procedure to work on mine.

I don't know exactly where to draw the line between the two types, perhaps Dr. Latino Pikachu or Xedosman will be able to comment further.
If memory serves, the newer type is cheap and plentiful secondhand, so if you have to use guesswork it would be a good start.

What year RS4? I imagine a Millenia would be far cheaper to run.

Ah it was 95-96. This would mean an international '96 model could use either style, unfortunately.
If the tyres get flat spots, they may need replacement to get rid of that sound. See how you go...

Yes it will have had the remote standard, and if you buy a new remote and follow the procedure it will work. I think it took me a few attempts but it was my first time.

I had a '94 model (which the Americans would call a '95) and that year was different so one had to specifically get a remote from the same year. These ones were expensive secondhand, and to make matters worse mine died soon after.
The later '96-'00 are the same if I recall correctly, more readily available and much more reasonably priced. A Millenia one will work so you can scour eBay USA.
