Rotary Dead... For Now

Mazda has built the final rotary engine of the current generation, but the revolutionary design may not be dead yet.

The final rotary engine has rolled off the Mazda production line in Hiroshima, flagging a hiatus for the powerplant itself and an end for the Mazda RX-8 sports car it powered.

Although devised by a German engineer, Felix Wankel, in the 1950s, the pistonless rotary unit is most closely associated with Mazda via a succession of cult sports-focused cars including the RX-7 and just-superseded RX-8 models.
