Troutman
Texting on the road -- it won't "be back" Everyone knows that text messaging while driving can be dangerously distracting. A recent study revealed that texting is more dangerous to driving than drugs or *This reference banned by MW*. Still many are fighting proposed legislation to ban texting while driving, complaining that it violates freedom and would limit options in an emergency. California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has taken a hard stance on texting while driving. He championed and passed a ban on cell phone texting, which will go into effect January 1. Offending motorists will pay $20 on their first violation, and $50 for each subsequent violation. Gov. Schwarzenegger was pleased to push through the bill by California's Tuesday legislative deadline. He hopes that the new bill will help dissuade drivers from using their cell phones when driving. He states, "Banning electronic text messaging while driving will keep drivers' hands on the wheel and their eyes on the road, making our roadways a safer place for all Californians." SteveSter
I can safely text and drive even on the highway, but then again I dont have to even look at my phone to text.
ing-schu@online.no
I guess most people have texted during driving. In my opinion it distracts you anyway, having to watch the screen or not. It is proved that we are distracted while talking on the cell too, even if using handsfree. Here you get a $200 fine for not using handsfree, read is seen with the cell in the region of your ear. I'm not sure about texting, but I believe they press charges.
purewhitemp5
When your driving thats all you should be duing is driving , not talking or texting on your cell phone , wolfing down a meal , applying makeup , drinking that super mega ultra super sized big gulp cola searching for your : CD , tape , radio station , remote , cell phone , that french fry you dropped , napkin , ketchup packet , that 5th of Jim Beam rolling on the floor or a cup holder for that super mega ultra super sized big gulp cola or coffee. mohamedeladawy@hotmail.com
20 DOLLARS?!?!??!?! THATS CHEAP!!! here in jersey, having the phone in ur hand, i repeat.. IN UR HAND!!!! is a 158 dollar charge that must be paid three times over three years! lucky bastards
SteveSter
$158 X 3? That is stupid, im glad floridas ticket system is flawed. I can get any ticket, go to court, pay $120 and I get no points and no traffic school and its done. Or on a seatbelt violation ticket I can just take it to court and say "I took off my seatbelt when I pulled over to get my license in my wallet" and it will most likely get dismissed. Jdubs99
Nov 16 2006, 09:51 AM We're gonna need the cars that drive themselves soon. Cell phones, MP3 players, mobile video systems...Jesus. I can't think of a worse time to integrate all this crap than when driving. I guess I'm old school, I do have Sirius and a bluetooth headset, but I just enjoy listening to music, and occasionally mashing the pedal. I don't try to run the defense department and drive at the same time.
enginph
Driving is wasting time. This is an issue especially in US, because you have to drive drive drive. There is no public transport. I drove up to San Francisco yesterday and talked on the phone 50% of the time. For me they should either totally ban talking on the phone or let us put it on to the ear. I can drive one hand and there is some sort of cars with what is called 'manual transmission' in which you have to drive one hand most of the time. Besides there are people I know who can talk on the phone, shift gear at the same time. Typically you need at least 3 hands for this. So there is absolutely no point of banning putting phone on the ear and letting hands free. Its even more distracting cause I cant hear it. SteveSter
I can shift drive and talk on the phone. Hold the phone to your left ear, drive with the right, when you need to shift bring your knee up to hold the steering wheel in place if you want (since when shifting your foot isnt on the gas) take your right hand off the steering wheel, shift and so on... I have a bluetooth headset, works off the same charger as my blackberry so its always there and ready to be used. I only use it when driving on the highway. Troutman
The former action movie star has signed a new bill -- which we told you about in August -- into law, making it illegal for anyone aged 16 or 17 to use a mobile phone, pager, laptop, or handheld computer while driving a vehicle. Effective July 1, 2008 (the same day that California's ban on non-hands-free mobile-use while driving takes effect), the state will begin to fine offenders $20 for their first incident, and $50 for each recurrent violation. "The simple fact is that teenage drivers are more easily distracted," said Schwarzenegger in a statement, adding, "We want to eliminate any extra distractions so they can focus on paying attention to the road and being good drivers." He then paused and remarked, "We just don't want to say 'Hasta la vista, baby' to young drivers anymore."
Renboy
If it were up to me, if you got caught talking/texting, you would have a month worth of bus rides on the first offense to talk/text your ass off. For every infraction following, the time your liscence would be suspended would grow exponentially.
