Troutman
We may not have the ice/salt/rust issue here, but due to high UV radiation it seems Australian conditions can cause a lot of fade on red cars. This is a random example (and there are far worse); the paint tends to turn matt, oxidised and more of a pinky-white kind of red. Often panels fade at different rates and the cars look woeful after a few years. Here's the first interesting thing. I recently discovered that using Meguiars step 1 paint cleaner over damaged red paint seems to be a miracle cure. The paint buffs off to a factory-like perfection on top of which one can apply the usual polish/wax. HOWEVER, yesterday I realised that a friend's car which I am supposed to be detailing has actually gone back to its former paint condition in just a few days. So now I'm completely lost as to why the paint reacts as it does, whether the fading colour is merely oxidisation on the paint or something fundamental, why restored paint would then fade again within a few days, and what can be done about it if anything! It's a long shot but if anyone has any ideas I will be interested. I think claybar, cut & polish might be my best bet now...
///BHRpowered
Another excellent reason to keep a car garaged, UV rays, you think red is bad, the damage to black is, extreme to say the least. the outdoor carcapsule has a special reflective silver lining that scatters light, no uv rays can get through, infact pretty dark, and it doesn't heat up the inside
MazdaMomma
really?
Troutman
It's interesting because my Eunie is black and still has good shine with the usual products applied even though I doubt it was garaged before I had it, but red turns a horrid matt. I am thinking that my best hope is cut & polish for the red car I will be detailing... (It is being detailed so it can be sold, so the car capsule wouldn't be much good at this point unfortunately.) ///BHRpowered
the red car was most likely parked in the sun all day long, plus its older and never had as good a paint job, But I have no doubt that when being compared to a brand spanking new black you will notice the difference, the waxing and even just parking in the shade greatly helps
Troutman
The cut and polish brought excellent results considering, though there is no doubt at all that prevention is far better than cure for situations such as this. I will certainly minimise if not totally eliminate any time the Eunie would spend baking in the sun with summer approaching. Though of course it is UV protected by multiple coats of wax anyway. ///BHRpowered
Another reason why I do not take the Millenia out when the UV rating is above 7, and yet people think I'm crazy
