Very Interesting New 3 Watt Led 1156/7 Bulb!

A new product has been released for 1156/7 applications and is being sold by Superbrightleds for $19 each. Autolumination are calling it Eagle Eye II for an extra $10 per bulb. However, it seems only Autolumination has white available, in addition to the same amber & red as Superbright. At this time, no Ebay seller has the 3 watt bulbs.

Using a single 3 watt LED with a 130 degree wide angle, this bulb is unlikely to illuminate the tail light housing reflectors like, say, a tower. But in terms of outright brightness it is a new standard which has every chance of outdoing even incandescent. We have long waited for this day! However, the bulb is likely to get extremely hot and clearly has an in-built heatsink. As per the high-power 1 watt 194, I suspect that the bulb would not last very long in constant-on applications. But it would be great for flashing turn signals and would also reduce the size of the load resistor needed to prevent hyperflash!

Hopefully Warden will come on board soon and make this affordable for the masses. In the meantime, it's good to see that there is at least being real progress made in this area. If anyone can afford a pair, let us know how you go!

I think the ideal design for an 1156 would consist of 4 x wide angle 1 watt LEDs, 3 of which shine backwards and 1 shines forward. Would leave OEM for dead... the heatsink would need to be pretty big though.

Nonetheless I'm eager to try these out... some day.

I agree, although I'm getting pretty damn sick of the heatsink issue, people bitch and whine about it all day long, but seriously, how hot do you think regular bulbs get?? I mean shit, they power a lavalamp and make the lights hot to the touch if they've been on long enough. while it may produce much more then smaller leds, your still talking far less then stock

All that was, will be :spider:

and more :shifty:

While what trout speaks is a problem, while some leds may produce more, to lots more heat then other leds of say the same size, the newer technology allows for them to operate like this. I would feel safer with a tower design because the leds would be spread out over a great area, as oppose to all stuck together on top

Either way it's nice to see things evolving, I'd love to support the new technology in the near future.

There is a possibility that the early cars with LED headlamps may actually have FANS to keep them cool. That is how serious the heat issue is. I'm sure in time they will manage to reduce the resistance that causes it.

hmm, I have not heard of any cars with fans, although I'm sure it would be the cheaper, unresearched, underfunded CRAP that comes from lexus and acura, the new TL brakelights are a lawsuit waiting to happen, the damn size of those things has to put out alot of heat, wait til they all go out and bam, someone drives right into the back of them, probably driving a lexus and couldn't stop because of the shitty brakes

MTS, you'll find it uses a combination of 3 and 5mm LEDs and output doesn't necessarily out-class even the traditional 24-LED 1156. I'm hanging onto my towers (18-LED towers are dirt cheap on Ebay if you want a basic solution... but it requires custom work to get them to fit).

yeah mine wouldn't even fit in the front

Yes, the entrance is not wide enough - by a long way. And yet, I had no problems with my indicators. Perhaps the 20-LED towers are more compact than the inferior 18-LED model. Either way, I hope that future bulbs will be more compact, as Velocity's latest is hinting at.
