Rough Idle/shutoff

Recommended Posts

car:

1993 Mazda MX-6 V6 LS automatic

problem: erratic idle, shuts off at red lights at times. stinky exhaust.

history: sitting for 8 months, bought by my friend, had old fuel in it. put new 5 dollars of fuel (a gallon and a half), still shutting off.

possible solution by us: replace fuel filter and fill it up with new gas and a bottle of fuel system cleaner.

now....gurus of mx-6's.... what is ur input on this? is our diagnosis correct or is there more to it?

Not one of the gurus, but did you check the air filter?

Pull the plugs and look at them. That's a good indicator of problems. Tell your friend not to run premium in the car, at most midgrade. Unless a ZE swap has been done, at which point it's a midgrade minimum. Eratic idle's are generally caused by vacuum leaks on these engines. It could be the IAC, it could also be the TPS or the VAF. Could also be the EGR, or the PCM. You're going to have to start testing.

Does the CEL turn on when the key is in the on position? Or is it possible the bulb has been removed or burnt out?

the guy had replaced the plugs couple thousand miles ago. engine check light DOES turn on when key is in the on position. so the bulb works. we checked the vacuum...nothing. could it be the darn fuel filter as my friend who had the same problem said changin the fuel filter would solve it. as well as running seafoam through the fuel system and the engine for precautionary measures.... this car has been driven by a woman and then sat for 8 months. ...

we just finished replacing the fuel filter and adjusting that air pump deal. we also found a loose vacuum hose behind the airbox. it is fine now. except for one thing. sometimes in first gear, the car would bog while pressing the gas at near full throttle and then it finally kicks into second gear and drives normally. any suggestions as to why this is?
