General Motors has taken a rare step for a car maker by removing the camouflage from pre-production models of its new Chevrolet Camaro that’s not due on sale till early 2009.

The first official image of a Camaro coupe prototype without disguise has been published on GM’s official Fastlane Blog and appears to have been photographed at Holden’s Lang Lang Proving Ground on the outskirts of Melbourne.

Holden is responsible for much of the engineering work on the Camaro, which is based on the VE Commodore’s underpinnings.

Chevrolet’s general manager, Ed Peper, says GM product boss Bob Lutz asked for disguises to be removed to help “further evaluations … for aerodynamics and cooling efficiency”.
