The next-generation Mazda3 small car has made its world debut at the 2008 Sydney motor show – but only as a series of photos.

Mazda’s first official pictures of the second iteration of the company’s best-selling model were revealed to media today, though members of the public won’t be able to see the car in the metal until the Los Angeles motor show in late November.

Specifications – and the hatchback version – won’t be revealed until November 19, leaving Mazda Australia’s semi-coup to show for now only that the second-generation Mazda3 sedan will ape its predecessor by looking like a shrunken version of the Mazda6 medium car – as well as featuring a front end inspired by the RX-8.

The new Mazda3 will hit Australian showrooms in mid 2009 with sharper styling than the current model that is already the third most popular passenger car locally, behind the Holden Commodore and Toyota Corolla.

The current Mazda3 is available in two body styles – sedan and hatch – that don’t share body panels, though there’s no word yet on whether this same approach will be applied to the new-generation models.
