Attempting to change brakes on 91 Miata, the back brakes are source of problem. I am able to use a 10mm to take off hold down clamp for brakes and insert new brakes. However, problem comes about when I attempt to compress caliper to fit new size of brakes. I have taken of emergency brakes, taken car out of gear, and even turned car on, no success. Any Suggestions?

Been there, done that. There is a adjustment set screw in the back of the rear calipers that will allow the piston to retract further. Any forcing of the piston against this screw can damage the caliper and piston. Once you back it out, change the pads then put everything back together, re-set the screw so that the back pad is barely touching the disc. Then you should be good to go.
