I have been using 9012 HIR bulbs for a year and eventually took some pictures to show that they really work.

Wiki description:

Halogen infrared reflective light sources

A further development of the tungsten-halogen bulb has a dichroic coating that passes visible light and reflects infrared radiation. The glass in such a bulb is spherical, rather than tubular. The reflected infrared radiation strikes the filament located at the centre of the sphere, heating the filament to a degree greater than occurs by passing an electric current through the filament. The filament thus superheated emits more light, without an increase in power consumption or a decrease in lifespan.

This is a picture of the bulb:

IPB Image

This is the bulb next to conventional Phillips bulb:

This is my car smile.gif

IPB Image

Left (passenger) is Phillips and right is HIR, observe the color and brightness:

This is above the cutoff same setup:

This is with both HIR:

It takes some time to warm up for HIR, left one is still warming in the last picture.

Comparison with regular 9006:

Great pics.

I like the idea, however I wish that they had executed it such that it would be slightly brighter than stock, use less power and run cooler. I am always conscious of damaging headlamp reflectors with hotter-than-stock bulbs. Then again, I could be wrong about it running hot...

HIR's are infact excellent bulbs, they are EXTREMELY popular with the Jeep crowd where HID's do not fit the charactor, however HID's, atleast 4300k still are the better option for light output - especially in the millenia

I might be running hot. Instead of dissipating the heat as IR, it reflects it back to the filament, the filament gets huper hot and the whole assembly gets hot. John Deere machines still uses these bulbs.

Indeed, although I have not noticed any heat issues, your certainly better off then the idiots running 85-100w bulbs

I'd love to have these bulbs. A shame if they are discontinued. Never seen them here.

--------------------
The engineers hoped to modify the boot lid in order to minimize wind resistance. The easiest method involved attaching
a rear spoiler, though that would detract from the vehicle's lines.
Alternatively, the lip of the lid could be enlarged, though that would require significant more work. Naturally, the team chose the second approach, and set to work in a wind tunnel lab in Miyoshi. A while later, they emerged with the hoped-for design, which was both aerodynamic and aesthetically pleasing...

2000 Xedos 9 2,5. Stock features: push-a-button retract mirrors, 1500 kg towing capasity, tranny cooler, rear swaybar, pollen filter, roof rack mounts.

Ported heads, knifeedged IM, dropin K&N with wheelwell airduct.

Check john deere suppliers. I found them online here. Hella cheap as well, yet was not in stock.. You can buy from ebay $37.5/ea for the time being. Used to be $30/ea vs $5-10 from john deere..

Thank you sir, we have John Deere here smile.gif
Are they also availible as H1 replacement? The highbeams on the Xedos and both lowbeams and highbeams on the 6 are H1.

I can get them through John Deere here, and the price is 177 NKR +taxes, equals $35 including taxes.

I will order 4 bulbs, is anyone interested? Shipment to USA is in the region of $10 (200 grammes) to $24 (1000 grammes). I might be able to bargain the price abit if I buy a larger amount smile.gif

How come, it is a minor plastic surgery on the socket.

I haven't ordered them yet, had other priorities. Bikeriding, and currently a business trip with my company Subaru. Which during the trip suffered two overheatings in spite of a recent thermostat replacement, a bust speedo followed by a check engine light, occasional engine stops on idle... umm, just about it part from a rear silencer needing replacement, currently delayed due to the price of $700. No kidding.

I have now confirmed it needs one or two new headgaskets, which means the engine has to come out of the car. Great fun when far from home. The best part is that this early POS 2,5 Quadcam boxer has a reputation to overheat, often leading to BOTH the heads and block needing to be shaved. Problem is... the block is hardly possible to shave.

I shall say this only once. Do not, ever, I repeat ever, concider buying a Subaru. They are decent as long as they run but a disaster to repair. Trust me. What is to be said about a brand charging $700 for a freaking silencer? GOD, am I glad this car is not under my wings.
