The newly revealed 2015 Mazda MX-5 will trade on its edgier design and sharper sub-$40K pricing to reclaim the youthful audience that has stopped buying the roadster in recent times when it launches in the second half of next year.

Mazda concedes its most iconic offering became a bit of an “old person’s” car within the outgoing NC model’s life-cycle, reflected by the company’s decision to offer only the safety-first hard-topped version since 2012, with a price nudging $50K.

But with the smash hit $30K Toyota 86 proving that it is still possible to lure young buyers into sports cars so long as they’re priced and designed right, Mazda says it has had a re-think, and will take the all-new ND closer to the pricing ground it needs to scoop up this crowd.

This strategy should also see annual sales creep back towards their peak. The 25-year-old MX-5 is the world’s top-selling sports car over its lifecycle, with about 970,000 sold thus far.

The first teaser image of Mazda's fourth-generation MX-5 has surfaced three weeks ahead of its official global reveal early next month.

Although it's draped by a thin veil, the rear side angle seen in the image reveals key design details for the first time, including the familiar long-bonnet silhouette that's been synonymous with the world's top-selling two-seat sports car since its inception in 1989.

However, adding weight to recent comments by senior Mazda executives that the Mk4 MX-5 "will look nothing like" the model it replaces is the appearance of far more muscular sheet metal.

Mazda's 25th anniversary edition of the MX-5 – which was first seen at the New York motor show in April – will officially go on sale in Australia today.

Priced from $48,380 (plus on-road costs), just 40 of the 1000 limited edition 25th Anniversary Mazda MX-5s are allocated to the Aussie market, 13 of which have already been reserved for customers.

Mazda said the special edition model sold-out "in minutes" in Japan and the USA and expects similar interest locally. Australian allocation consists of 24 manual and 16 automatic versions, all of which are based on the current model.

Externally, the limited edition 25th Anniversary MX-5 is identified by Soul Red metallic paint, black-painted A-pillars, door mirrors and retractable roof. Inside the model receives off-white leather upholstery and door cards, a black leather armrest, steering wheel and shift knob highlighted with red stitching, stainless steel scuff plates with 25th Anniversary logo and individual serial numbers.

Customers will also receive a branded his and hers Tourneau commemorative watch set Mazda says complements the 25th Anniversary model's styling. It is constructed of surgical quality stainless steel, and has a genuine sapphire crystal face and a black leather strap with red stitching.

Mazda has sold more than 940,000 examples of the MX-5 since the original NA-series went on sale in 1989. A replacement model is due next year which Mazda says will be slightly smaller, much lighter and boast higher quality and safety levels than any previous model. It is tipped the new model will be powered by a 1.5-litre variant of Mazda's SKYACTIVE powertrain and will also form the basis of an upcoming Fiat sportscar.

The new MX-5 will be officially unveiled next month (September).

With the arrival of the all-new Mazda2, the Hiroshima-based company has finally solidified its four core SKYACTIV models, adding the new 2 to the CX-5, Mazda3 and Mazda6.

The outgoing Mazda2 captured the World Car of the Year prize back in 2008, so the new model has a lot to live up to.

And from our brief test of a pre-production model (albeit an undisguised one built later than the first new Mazda2 we drove last month) at the Shuzenji proving ground two hours south of Tokyo, first impressions are stellar for a hatchback that has to lock horns with the likes of the Volkswagen Polo, Ford Fiesta, Toyota Yaris and Hyundai i20.

The fourth all-SKYACTIV Mazda model is totally new. By that, we mean the 2 gets an all-new platform, all-new powertrains, a redesigned interior, improved driver comfort, enhanced on-road dynamics and a stylish new body.

Bigger all-round, the Mazda2 gains 160 mm in length to 4060mm, picks up 25mm in height to 1500 mm, while its wheelbase stretches 80mm to 2570mm. Width remains unchanged. And when you consider the new 2 is a bigger car with significantly more new technologies, a kerb weight gain of just 40kg for the base Japanese version (up from 990 to 1030kg) is more than acceptable.
