Troutman
For A$36 posted I knew I couldn't go wrong, but alas it seems this is one of the simplest and cleverest devices in a while. Here is a picture. Basically you stick in an SD card with MP3/WMA files on it, its is powered from the cigarette lighter and transmits to the FM radio in the car. There are no batteries, moving parts nor any limit to the amount of data you can cram into it, plus you have a small backlit screen with read-out of the song title. Of course there is a compromise to sound quality being MP3 plus going over radio (and reception isn't great in all cars), but in the context of real-world driving with so much other noise etc anyway it is a neat little device. It also can be connected to any devices with a headphone jack, or a USB key.
enginph
My previous experience is that the quality of those guys SUCK!!! We need to find a way to directly connect a good mp3 player to bose..
Troutman
I have had a transmitting device in the past with poor transmitting qualities, in this case I'm still undecided, it did work very well in a Ford Falcon but I haven't tried it in the Eunie. If you mean build quality, I have reservations but because it is so simple I figure it should last a while if not messed with.
enginph
My friend had one which is similar except you plug a usb mem stick. It works good in his altima but when we tried it in bose it SUCKS. It is partially because milly has small antenna on the rear window. Worse than cassette..
Frankzao
THe option I use is cassette. Most reliable and better sound quality than FM
Troutman
I was worried that the rear mount aerial might be a problem, if so... DAMN.
MazdaMomma
my xm is connected to the radio antenna integrated into the rear windshield.
Troutman
Well the reception isn't perfect but it is passable... nonetheless I think this type of concept will be much more common in future. I'd rather an SD slot than a CD player.
Jdubs99
Unfortunately, OEM has decided to take part of the 5 billion dollar a year aftermarket audio industry. You'll notice that most newer cars now are damn near impossible to create a dash kit for due to Audio/HVAC conrols being integrated to one circuit board/physical dash piece. Going forward, most of us enthusiast will have to be satisfied with OEM audio players, and paying $800 for digital line out converters to use aftermarket amps and speakers. Even worse is the push for cars to switch to 48 volt electrical systems. I'm glad i'm not in the business anymore.
Shinta786
Hey, what I WOULD do to read MP3 files from an external source... I buy a 4Gb MP3 player (€50 ONLY), but for those who have more money there is still a multimedia hard disk on the market from iDREAM which costs like €159 and it has 320Gb. So Where the headphone JACK comes out, I put one in and cut the cables. Extend those cables to a caliber signal transmitter (€15) and connect the caliber with the AUDIO IN port of my radio. And ready U R!!! HIGH quality audio from an external source. It will be BANGING when u got the 320Gb drive!, but for €65 you can have a 4Gb external unit. There are also 512Mb for €15............but thats waste of time. I am working on a CAR-PC. ALL kinds of multimedia on my 7" robotisized screen. I will do it with a SOFTMOD (€25) to a XBOX (€75). €100 for a SWEET MULTIMEDIA SYSTEM. C ya
enginph
The thing is i dont have the audio in port..
Troutman
FM transmission is the alternative to an audio in port. Good work 786, just a personal thing though, I don't believe in having rotating platter hard drives in a car (which currently most large capacity drives are, including the big 40 gb etc Ipods). They get hot, they burn themselves out and they are damaged by bumps and other movement. A flash hard drive is much more costly (but getting cheaper) but perfect for the job.
