dwmcqueen
I was just under my car and noticed black soot near the flange on the front pipe. I assume there is normally a gasket there - is mine probably shot? Might this also be why my Millenia makes a louder grumbling noise when accelerating??? ///BHRpowered
Do you have a 2.5, or a Supercharged S. A shot gasket wouldn't usually cause a noise you would hear while hammering it from inside the cabin.
dwmcqueen
2.5. And it is just a louder rumbling than my older 95 2.5 had... Sort of sounds like the muffler is broken or louder than normal.
///BHRpowered
No real gaskets, its all clamped together pretty good, if your getting black soot there is a leak somewhere and the car is running a bit rich, but unless you can see a hole there shouldn't be a big noise difference. I'v seen entire exhaust replacement systems for around 200, or you could just go to an exhaust ship and for 80 dollars have a new pipe put in. dwmcqueen
Thanks...I remember in my 95 when removing the oil pan, I removed a smaller gasket and put a new one in when reattaching the front pipe. As far as running rich - anything to look at there?
///BHRpowered
depends on mileage and over all condition. The EGR valve on millenia's is known to junk up and need cleaning, other wise just keep all the fluids up to par, air/fuel flush every 50-60k isn't a bad idea either, or seafoam if you perfer. dwmcqueen
Condition is pretty good, except for the rumbling noise. I seafoamed it, replaced spark plugs, running some Techron through it now and will replace the accessory belts this weekend. Thought I would try to address the sound by looking at that flange to see if a leak is occuring that may be causing the noise.
///BHRpowered
How many miles are on it? some people who love in colder areas with tons of salt report some underbody rust, especially the exhaust.
dwmcqueen
75k. I need to get under the car today to do a visual inspection of the exhaust. The reason I thought it might be where the flange is located is since it 'sounds' like the rumbling noise is coming from the front of the car. Car was cheap, and maintained, but some 60k service items weren't taken care of (fuel filter, belts).
Renboy
There are gaskets there that can break down. The gaskets are cheap and easy to replace. And they will cause the car to be louder, since it's an exhaust leak.
ing-schu@online.no
Yup. Have someone block the exhaust tips while engine is idling, great way to trace leaks.
dwmcqueen
It was that gasket - $3.99 at O'Reilly and my car is much quieter...
