enginph
Not one of the gurus, but did you check the air filter? car: 1993 Mazda MX-6 V6 LS automatic problem: erratic idle, shuts off at red lights at times. stinky exhaust. history: sitting for 8 months, bought by my friend, had old fuel in it. put new 5 dollars of fuel (a gallon and a half), still shutting off. possible solution by us: replace fuel filter and fill it up with new gas and a bottle of fuel system cleaner. now....gurus of mx-6's.... what is ur input on this? is our diagnosis correct or is there more to it? mohamedeladawy@hotmail.com
not yet no. but i highly doubt it is. when the car is in gear (D,L,S,R) it idles sub 500. and gets an erratic. upon startup, it idles normal (if u call 600 normal). any clues? can a possible suspect be the IAC valve? kimO4u
and when the car shuts down, it takes at least 3 or more times to start the car back depends on luck i guess??? p.s. i am this mx6 owner

Renboy
Pull the plugs and look at them. That's a good indicator of problems. Tell your friend not to run premium in the car, at most midgrade. Unless a ZE swap has been done, at which point it's a midgrade minimum. Eratic idle's are generally caused by vacuum leaks on these engines. It could be the IAC, it could also be the TPS or the VAF. Could also be the EGR, or the PCM. You're going to have to start testing. Does the CEL turn on when the key is in the on position? Or is it possible the bulb has been removed or burnt out? kimO4u
the guy had replaced the plugs couple thousand miles ago. engine check light DOES turn on when key is in the on position. so the bulb works. we checked the vacuum...nothing. could it be the darn fuel filter as my friend who had the same problem said changin the fuel filter would solve it. as well as running seafoam through the fuel system and the engine for precautionary measures.... this car has been driven by a woman and then sat for 8 months. ... mohamedeladawy@hotmail.com
here was the problem the whole time. SOMEONE STUCK A BANANA IN THE INTAKE HOSE!!! jk we just finished replacing the fuel filter and adjusting that air pump deal. we also found a loose vacuum hose behind the airbox. it is fine now. except for one thing. sometimes in first gear, the car would bog while pressing the gas at near full throttle and then it finally kicks into second gear and drives normally. any suggestions as to why this is? mts
Change the plugs
kimO4u
actually, the guy said tat he changed the plugs and we looked @ them and they are okey. We think it could be a lose vacuum. We shall look into it more.
mohamedeladawy@hotmail.com
yaa..plugs and wires are fine. there isnt even any oily residue in the chambers. im gonna go ahead and rebuild the IAC valve and see if that helps. p.s. what is that damn air pump for? u know the one next to the throttle body and when its pulled, it pulls on the throttle cable? mohamedeladawy@hotmail.com
alternator went out....we gotta replace it now. also, the belt was shot. prolly explains why the car kept dying and had erratic idle...it was running on the battery! anyway... Troutman
But if that were the case it would not start at all, as happened to me.
mts
Depends on how bad the alternator was...
mohamedeladawy@hotmail.com
ya it didnt. lol
mohamedeladawy@hotmail.com
the car just didnt start anymore. when we would put the battery, the car would start. after starting, we would remove the battery and the car would die. meaning the alternator doesnt work. Troutman
Checking battery voltage with a multimeter is an easier way. With the engine running it should be 14-ish.
